Attacking the eternal
Lesson 56 of A Course in Miracles
Welcome to Daily Miracles, a running commentary on the 365 lessons of A Course in Miracles, an influential spiritual text from the 1970s. I am James Leroy Wilson and I invite you to join me as I go through this material for the first time.
(26) My attack thoughts are attacking my invulnerability. (ACIM, W-56.1:1)
(27) Above all else I want to see. (ACIM, W-56.2:1)
(28) Above all else I want to see differently.(ACIM, W-56.3:1)
(29) God is in everything I see. (ACIM, W-56.4:1)
(30) God is in everything I see because God is in my mind. (ACIM, W-56.5:1)
I don’t think I grasped what was meant about “invulnerability” the first time we went through Lesson 26. Being “vulnerable” is often encouraged in our society to describe one’s thoughts and feelings to others, including confessions of wrongdoing and admitting weaknesses. In contrast, “invulnerable” seems synonymous with “impenetrable” or “unyielding.”
I think “invulnerable” means “eternal” and “unchanging.” That is, real. We try to prevent attacks against our own self-image, but our self-image isn’t real.
When we see things as they are, we are God. The wrongdoing we perceive ourselves to have done disappears, as do our weaknesses.
