Commentary on A Course in Miracles: Lesson 19
Thinking like Betty White
Welcome to Daily Miracles, a running commentary on the 365 lessons of A Course in Miracles, an influential spiritual text from the 1970s. I am James Leroy Wilson and I invite you to join me as I go through this material for the first time.
I am not alone in experiencing the effects of my thoughts. (ACIM, W-19)
In my initial exercise of thinking, “I am not alone in experiencing the effects of this thought about _____________,” I couldn’t help but think about subjects in which people have a strong or emotional opinion. The subjects of my thoughts were Hitler, television, social media, pineapple pizza, kale, and the JFK assassination.
Betty White passed away late last year (2021) and as I write her memory is still fresh in many people’s minds. Along with starring in some tv series, she had also been a regular celebrity panelist or player on game shows like Match Game, Password, and the $25,000 Pyramid. Thinking about watching those shows as a child, I realized one thing those shows sought to do was get the thoughts of the contestant and the celebrity into alignment.
I’m not sure if that relates to today’s lesson, except that there may be social and cultural constructs in place to get us to think the same thing when we hear a word or phrase, even if the constructs aren’t really real.
