Lesson 7
Memory and only memory makes the connection between what we see and how we feel about it. Because thoughts come from feelings, memory seems to be a source of thought. Perhaps the only source of thought. In any case, the thing-as-it-is isn’t necessarily the same as the thing-as-it-was according to one’s memory.
Perhaps “mindfulness” is awareness that the present thing is not the past thing, and that an unpleasant memory about the past thing is irrelevant to the present moment.
Lesson 8
What is the present but the sum total of previous experience? That past — our memories — frame our desires. A desire, and a step toward its fulfillment in the “future,” might be all that the present moment contains.
When you’re at the top of a mountain, do you not remember the climb? Are you not happy or proud that you completed the climb? Is thinking about the climb really “not thinking at all?”
Lesson 9
I’m somewhat aware that, from a scientific point of view, our eyeballs aren’t really seeing. There’s a process in which our brains form the images. I’m not sure how this really squares with…
