Welcome to the Daily Bible Chapter. My name is James Leroy Wilson and I invite you to join me as we discover new insights and new perspectives from a very old book.

Genesis 32

I’m reading the Young’s Literal Translation (YLT) and the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV).

As discussed before, Esau seems to represent “worldly” ways, and apparently he prospered so much that he has 400 men. Or, the 400 men were gathered as a defensive maneuver and negotiating tactic, a “show of force” as Esau could not have known what Jacob’s intentions really were.

But Jacob had reconciled with Laban, and now seeks reconciliation with Esau despite his own fears. His wrestling with God may have been a test of his faith and resolve.

If acting out of prudence and reason, if one judges by appearances, then perhaps avoiding Esau is the wise thing to do. But reconciliation is the opposite of fear, and that’s what Jacob attempts.
