Exodus 34
I’m reading Young’s Literal Translation (YLT) and the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV).
This is the self-description of The LORD:
“The LORD, the LORD,
a God merciful and gracious,
slow to anger,
and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,
keeping steadfast love for the thousandth generation
forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin,
yet by no means clearing the guilty,
but visiting the iniquity of the parents
upon the children
and the children’s children,
to the third and the fourth generation.”
That seems a little confusing, doesn’t it? Iniquity is forgiven, but visited on the children for generations? I wonder if it means that the iniquitous parents can be forgiven, but the earthly consequences of destructive actions will nevertheless run their…
