Slack
Sometimes we put off claiming what’s ours.
Welcome to the Daily Bible Chapter. My name is James Leroy Wilson and I invite you to join me as I attempt to read the Bible with fresh eyes, as if I don’t know anything about it, and without consulting experts on what it “really” means. Let’s see where this takes us!
Joshua 18 and 19.
I’m reading Young’s Literal Translation (YLT) and the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV).
Joshua accuses the remaining seven tribes of “slack” in settling the land (Reuben, Gad, Judah, Ephriam, and Manasseh settled in their portions). Sometimes we are too comfortable where we are and delay changing our lives. After all, this generation of Israelites had known nothing except the mobile camp they had lived in all their lives.
But Joshua sent out surveyors and apportioned land by each tribe by lot. Of note in Joshua 18 is that two of the most famous towns from the Bible, Jericho and Jerusalem, are found in the land allotted to Benjamin.
Speaking of famous towns, we see that in Joshua 19 that Bethlehem is allotted to Zebulun.
Although Israel had conquered the entire area, it seems that the land given to Dan had to be re-conquered, but that tribe conquered it without help from the other tribes.
